A long time ago, (before the city name is Banyuwangi it was Blambangan) there live a king who has a son named Raden Banterang. he was smart and handsome. He likes to hunt and he often go to the forest to hunt animals.
One day, when Raden Banterang went to a forest. he saw a deer, he wanted to hunt the deer. but the deer ran away into the deeper forest. and the deer succeed to ran away. he got tired and then he took a rest under a big Banyan tree. and suddenly, a pretty lady came to him. he got curious and suspecting that she might not be a person, but she's another creature.
"excuse me, lady, do you live around here ?," asked Raden Baterang.
"No, i live in Klungklung, Bali. My name is Surati and i'm a princess. i'm the daughter of the King of Klungklung. and i need your help," answered her
"oh okay, what kind of a help do you need ?"
"there was a rebellion at my kingdom. and it killed my father. thankfully, i'm succeed to escape from the rebellion. my guards took me here. but i lost them. now, i don't have anyone and i don't know where to go"
and then, Raden Banterang offered Surati to protect her. and Raden Banterang took Surati back to his castle. Raden Banterang fell in love with Surati and they got married several months later.
one day, Surati heard someone was calling her name. andwhen she looked back, it was Rupaksa, her brother. but Rupaksa told her a really shocking news. he told her that Raden Banterang was the one who killed their father. but Surati didn't believe him. because Raden Banterang has being a really great husband. Rupaksa disappointed but he asked one thing to Surati. "please, take my head-band and put it under you pillow" because Surati wanted to respect her brother, so she did exactly what her brother asked her to do.
couple days later. Raden Banterang was hunting at the forest when a priest came to him. the priest greeted him and said that his life is in danger. Raden Banterang surely get shocked and he asked the priest who would have the dare to frightened the prince of Blambangan . and shockingly, the priest said it was his wife, Surati! because Surati put Rupaksa's headband under her pillow. because the priest said that the headband has been charmed to kill him.
when he got back from hunting. he directly went to Surati's bedroom and asked her if what the priest's said is true that she wanted to kill him. and Raden Banterang took Rupaksa's headband as the evidence. but Surati didn't know anything when her brother asked her to put it under her pillow. Surati was just an innocence woman. when she confessed the truth to her husband. her husband didn't believe her and he said he's still going to kill her.
and then, Raden Banterang took her near to a river bank. but before Raden Banterang kill her. Surati said; "when you've killed me. please throw my body to the river. and if i truly guilty. then the river will become smelly and dirty. but if i'm innocence, then the river will turn out to be clear and fragrant"
so Raden Banterang did what his wife asked him to do. he threw her body to the river. and unfortunately, she was right. she's innocence, the river became clear and fragrant.
since then, the kingdom changed to be "Banyuwangi" banyu means water and wangi means fragrant
